Calabar Carnival

The Calabar Carnival originated in 2004, when the governor of Cross River, Donald Duke, decided that a way to boost the economy and tourism was to make Calabar the pride of Nigeria by hosting an African carnival.

This festival would showcase the cultural heritage, customs, and traditions of the region to thousands of participants and spectators from around the world who would visit Calabar in December.

It is ironic that one of the youngest carnivals in the world is the largest and best in Africa.

The Carnival Calabar Bands

There are seven main bands in the Calabar Carnival, five veteran and two new. These bands or groups compete among themselves and are made up of around 10,000 participants each.

Each band has its own king and queen, who lead the band with their spectacular costumes, setting the standard for the rest of the outfits. The bands are distinguished by their colors and names, making them unique and unmistakable.

The five existing veteran bands are:

Bayside Band (Colour Blue)

Bayside Band, one of the seven main bands of the Calabar carnival, is notable for its distinctive blue color and unique style that celebrates music, dance, and elaborate costumes.

Founded by Donald and Onari Duke, this band has gained recognition for its vibrant performance and commitment to Calabar’s cultural identity.

With each participation, Bayside not only captivates audiences but also enriches the carnival experience, acting as guardians of the cultural legacy of the region.

Masta Blasta Band (Colour Orange)

Masta Blasta Band, known as “The Orange Family“, in orange, is one of the most prominent bands of the Calabar Carnival, with over 10,000 global members since its founding in 2005.

Under the leadership of Chief Senator Gershom Bassey, it is characterized by its inclusive approach, creating a festive atmosphere for all.

Additionally, it has been the champion of the carnival from 2012 to 2016 and holds the record for the most awards in a single year in the event’s history, solidifying its position as an icon of joy and unity.

Seagull Band (Colour Red)

Seagull Band, a prominent carnival band since 2005, is distinguished by its elegance and organization, focusing on promoting tourism and charity.

Recognizable by its vibrant red color, the band is led by the charismatic Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, with the support of Professor Affiong Effiom.

Each year, during the carnival, Seagull Band celebrates African culture, paying tribute to Nigerian artists and notable figures in entertainment, blending creativity and talent into an unforgettable show.

Freedom Band (Colour Yellow)

Freedom Band, famous for its distinctive yellow color, was founded in 2005 by Captain Henry Brisibe and Mr. Larry Esin.

Since then, it has maintained its status as one of the top three bands in the Carnival Calabar, establishing itself as a benchmark in the event.

Currently, it has the support of the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency Barr. Efiok Cobham, who acts as its major sponsor.

Passion 4 Band (Colour Green)

Passion 4 is the most successful band in the Calabar Carnival, with six victories and two second places in eight years, solidifying its position as the most prominent in Africa.

Under the leadership of new leader Barr. Attah Ochinike and with former leader Chris Agibe supervising the carnival, Passion 4 continues to innovate in creativity and organization.

Known as the green band, it offers an inclusive experience for all ages, making it the perfect choice for sponsors seeking visibility and exceptional benefits.

The Diamond Band and The Calas Vegas Band are the two new bands that have recently joined.
